United Shore was named as a Top Workplace in Michigan by the Detroit Free Press in the publication’s annual special feature. The company ranked No. 7 among large companies throughout the entire state.
This marks the sixth year in a row that United Shore has won this award, an achievement that earned the company a spot among the Free Press’ Circle of Excellence. This distinction – which is given to the “overachievers among overachievers” – is earned by receiving high rankings from team members year after year.
United Shore Chief People Officer Laura Lawson spoke on a panel at the Top Workplaces ceremony on Nov. 2, discussing the practices that have made the company a top workplace. She emphasized United Shore’s commitment to a “Firm 40” – the company’s urging of team members to stick to a 40-hour work week.
Lawson also discussed the company’s prioritization of training, and the effect that has had on United Shore’s hiring practices. Instead of focusing on a candidate’s previous experience in the mortgage industry, United Shore places much more emphasis on cultural fit (in the form of work ethic and attitude) – building up technical knowledge as new hires join the company.
"That opened up a whole world for us of really amazing, cool people that want to grind hard, and we can turn them into the experts that we need," Lawson said during the panel discussion.
Another highlight for United Shore in the 2017 Top Workplaces came at an individual level, as President/CEO Mat Ishbia was recognized with the Detroit Free Press Top Workplaces Leadership Award. Ishbia was the highest-ranking CEO in the state of Michigan, based on survey scores.
United Shore is one of the fastest-growing independent mortgage lenders in the country. It is the parent company of United Wholesale Mortgage, the nation’s top wholesale lender.
